1954 Buick 8 Special/ Police Car

Shot on October 8, 2012, this 1954 Buick 8 Special, on display in front of the Middleton Mass. Police HQ. I really like the old style emergency blue end red lights. I almost ran off the road when I spotted it and tried to turn around to shoot it.

I think it's actually a '53 Buick; the '54 had a wraparound windshield and other spotting differences.

Nice car nonetheless; the Philadelphia fire chief used to have one of this vintage. That said, I think this is a bogus police car, maybe for parades and other special events. The siren and beacon are OK, but the graphics are much too new. Also, 9-1-1 wasn't used as an emergency number in the US till the late 60s and many areas didn't adopt it till the 80s.

Finally, "Car 54" is a nice touch -- probably refers to the satirical TV police show, "Car 54, Where Are You?", which ran on US TV 1961-63. Those funny NYPD cops drove a 1961 Plymouth, perhaps the ugliest monster Chrysler ever built. google "1961 plymouth police car" for an image of a real one in NYPD service.

As you wrote, Michael, this is a fantasy car, not a restoration of an actual unit. Real US police cars never used whitewall tires or wheel covers, and the fender mounted Federal red light/siren combo doesn't make sense in combination with a blue beacon ray. Whoever wasted their time on this car could have at least polished out the rust on the bumper.

I'd have to think it was commissioned by a local department who wanted a "Vintage Police Car" for parades and had the community college kids do the work.
